Ian Pearson

I have been working with glass for over 50 years originally trained as a scientific glassblower making technical glassware for schools, universities etc…. In 1990 I set up my own Business Glass Creations in Thurso where I practice my style of working glass which involves manipulating glass tubing and rod in an open flame. I tend to work on commissions most of the time. The project “Legends of Caithness” excited me as I could see the opportunity to promote glass as a sculpture form since I believe it is the most versatile material ever!

Throughout my 30 year career as a glass artist I have exhibited in several different countries at many exhibitions. During this time I have earnt a name for being quirky which I relish, nurture and cultivate. I like taking a simple idea and turning it around, in some cases on its head to throw new perspectives on a traditional view. I have been awarded many presentations by various glass societies in recognition of my style. My favourite one was in 1993 by the Scottish Glass Society when I won “Oddball of the Year”!!!

I tend to work in clear glass. It is a special type of glass known as borosilicate which is used in scientific, medical and other technical purposes. It is my twist on turning a material design for a scientific purpose to one of artistic. Technically both the Broch Glass and the £ Turbine present their own challenges and required very deft handwork and precise heating to create the shapes. I prefer shape and meaning before colour to my material.
